Whole Health Insights: GLP-1s – Is Something Important Missing from the Conversation? (Part 2)

Posted by Carolyn Kontos, Wellness and Nutrition Coach on March 27, 2025

In last week’s Whole Health Insights blog post –  Everyone is Talking About GLP-1s—But Is Something Important Missing from the Conversation? – I emphasized the importance of shared decision-making when considering any weight loss medication or intervention. But what exactly does that look like?

Before considering GLP-1s engage your doctor in shared decision-making, and consider these three things:

  1. Get clear on what you’d be signing up for:
  • What’s my goal, and why is that important to me?
  • What will this entail? Is this a short-term or long-term commitment?
  • What are the expected benefits and potential risks?
  • How may it impact my relationships, routines, budget and other areas of my life (positively or negatively)?
  • What am I willing to do/not do?
  1. Anticipate and plan
  • How will I manage any side effects?
  • What happens when I stop taking it?
  • How will I maintain results?
  • What is the plan for eating a healthy diet, exercise and for mindset shifts?
  • How will I handle feeling differently, others seeing me differently, changes in my interests, or impact on relationships?
  1. Secure the right support
  • When will I connect with my doctor to monitor and evaluate progress?
  • What will help me get all the nutrients needed for healthy bones and hormone regulation, and will I work with a Coach or Dietician?
  • What physical activity will keep me strong, and will I enlist the support of a group exercise class, friend or trainer to stay motivated?
  • Do I have a network of social support?

If you are considering GLP-1s, make sure you’re not just asking “Should I take this?”, but “How do I make this work for my long-term health?” A well-thought-out plan can help you make a well-informed and supported decision.  It can also help ensure that you use GLP-1s strategically and effectively.  The most successful weight-loss strategies go beyond medication.  They include an engaged care team, nutrition guidance, and lifestyle support. This combination leads to better long-term outcomes.  Work with your doctor and add layers of support to help you navigate the physical, emotional and social aspects of weight loss.  It’s a conversation worth having!
