Fat – Setting the Record Straight
Fat has gotten a bad rap, and it’s no one’s fault.
For years, we were told fat was the enemy, especially with its links to chronic disease. The truth is that most people in the US consume too much fat and specifically, the unhealthy kinds.
While very well-intended, the response was a tidal wave of advice: “Cut the fat!” It’s a nice idea, but as with many things, it’s nuanced.
The truth is, we need fat. Some fats are not only beneficial, but essential for good health. The key is knowing which fats to include. This one hits home for me personally. I grew up with family members hounded by high cholesterol, and had rather high cholesterol at a young age. I quickly jumped on board with the “watch out for fat” mantra, and I learned the hard way that I was cutting out some good parts of my diet.
If you’re looking for a tip for where to begin, try adding Extra Virgin Olive Oil to your next grocery list. Not everyone loves the taste, but if you do, it’s a great way to start cooking healthier!
