Part of what drew me back to Pittsburgh in 2016 and to join the staff of the JCC in 2017 is the strength of this local community and its ability to come together in shared spaces to celebrate, to activate or to provide one another comfort, support and a sense of belonging.
The importance of community gathering is not just about being physically present but about what that presence represents. It means being there for one another, offering a shoulder to lean on, and sharing in collective hope and resilience. During joyous occasions, it allows us to amplify our happiness and create lasting memories that are cherished for years. In times of struggle, gathering together reminds us that we are not alone—our strength is multiplied, and our voices are unified.

This past Monday, the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh brought us together to commemorate the murderous terrorist attack committed against Israel on October 7, 2023. More than 1,250 people lined Darlington Road just outside of the JCC in Squirrel Hill to listen to personal accounts of the tragedy and bravery from that fateful day. The presence of so many, each bringing their own grief and sorrow as well as a spirit of compassion and strength, was a testament to our shared values and commitment to standing with those affected by this senseless and horrific violence both in Israel and around the world. As we sang in prayer, shared reflections and embraced one another, we found comfort in being together and reaffirming our bonds as a community that believes in hope, resilience and peace.
I would like to share a heartfelt thank you to our incredible Greater Pittsburgh community for your presence and your participation earlier this week. You helped create a space for healing and remembrance and once again demonstrated the power of this community and why my family and I returned to Pittsburgh more than eight years ago. We know that life will always bring both good times and hard times. What remains constant is the power of togetherness. In standing shoulder to shoulder, we remind ourselves and each other of our shared values, of the importance of lifting each other up and of the role we each play in nurturing this vibrant and resilient community. May we continue to draw strength from each other and stay united in our commitment to the warmth and connection that have defined our community through the years.
Wishing you and your families a Shabbat shalom. G’mar chatima tova.
