Celebration Kit pick-up: Tuesday, January 26, 3-5 pm at the JCC in Squirrel Hill
Tu b’Shvat is the birthday of the trees, and while January weather in Pittsburgh doesn’t lend itself to planting trees, our Tu b’Shvat Celebration will remind families of our connection to the earth and in particular to the land of Israel. Together, families will create a terrarium layered with dirt, pebbles and plants. Our tiny eco system creation will begin by placing a picture of Israel into the container to serve as a background for the terrarium. As we add in the layers of rocks, soil, and plants, we will investigate the climate and terrain of Israel. Once completed, these indoor gardens will be a constant reminder of the importance of our natural resources and of the Jewish People’s connection to Eretz Yisrael. We will complete our celebration with a Tu b’Shvat kiddush of two kinds of juice. Much like our traditions teach us that we should plant trees not for ourselves, but for the generations to come, Tu b’Shvat Terrariums will plant seed of Judaism for the next generation.
