Direct from Berlin Bringing Jewish Music Back From the Ashes of Kristallnacht: The Berlin-based Semer Ensemble, comprised of musicians from the US, Russia, Germany and Latvia, perform music that was lost to the world for more than 70 years. The Semer record label was founded in Berlin,1932 to record Jewish music. On November 9,1938 (Kristallnacht), more than 4,500 of the records were destroyed by the Nazis. From 1992-2001, German musicologist Rainer E. Lotz scoured the globe searching for the recordings in far-flung places; miraculously, he succeeded in collecting the entire roster of Semer’s output. Berlin’s Jewish Museum commisioned Indianapolis-born composer Alan Bern to put together an ensemble with the purpose of performing the Semer repertoire. It was first performed at a klezmer festival in 2012.
