What a difference #ONEDAY makes!
The JCC is thankful to be taking part in the 2020 Critical Needs Alert online giving event at www.pittsburghgives.org/jccpittsburgh on Aug. 19 from 8 am to 11:59 pm. Donations made on #ONEDAY, which is hosted by the Pittsburgh Foundation, will be matched.
In these times of unprecedented economic, health and human services challenges, meeting basic needs has become even more crucial and our mission ever more important in helping community and those in need.
The JCC of Greater Pittsburgh is one of the largest social service, recreational and educational organizations in the region, with a membership base of 20,000 individuals and serving more than 32,000 people annually. For over 125 years, the JCC has been open and accessible to everyone, regardless of age, race, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression or special need. The JCC welcomes individuals of all backgrounds, embracing their uniqueness and diversity under our communal tent.
On March 13, 2020, the JCC was at an apex in its 125 year history. JCC membership was at an all-time high and our financial health was excellent. We were providing $3.4 million a year in financial assistance — 14% of our annual operating budget — enabling many to participate in the many essential programs and services that the JCC provides.
On March 15, 2020 that success came crashing down without warning. Suddenly:
- 80% of our operating revenue was frozen in place
- The crisis forced a large scale reduction in workforce to reduce operating expenses
Yet, even as the JCC contends with the drastic financial and operational changes brought about by this crisis, the agency continues to provide impactful services to a community struggling with the fallout of the pandemic.
To date, the JCC’s life-sustaining programs have:
- Provided almost 20,000 Grab & Go and Delivered meals for seniors
- Facilitated as many as 1,000 Blood Donations
- Organized almost 7,000 Telephone Wellness Checks to isolated seniors
- Distributed more than 10,000 USDA Summer Food Service for Children meals
- Reached home-bound individuals with a large menu of LIVE Virtual Group Exercise and Senior Fitness classes (currently 54/week)
Let’s not allow a pandemic to destroy what we have built over 125 years and many generations. We look to you to support our next phase – for the families, community and staff who rely on us to make this next chapter of JCC life one of resiliency and accomplishment.
