The First Amendment for the 21st Century: A Conference in Squirrel Hill About Our Nation’s Tensions with Freedom of Religion

The Conference is sponsored by the Jewish Community Center of Greater Pittsburgh’s Center for Loving Kindness and is funded by The Pittsburgh Foundation.

The First Amendment for the 21st Century is one of a series created by The Pittsburgh Foundation to examine First Amendment issues “grounded in our deep concern about current threats to foundational freedoms that together constitute our democracy.”  The conference will include speakers, panelists and a town hall meeting to address the issue of freedom of religion from a variety of perspectives.

Featured keynote speakers:

  • Michael McConnell , Richard and Frances Mallery Professor and Director of the Constitutional Law Center at Stanford Law School, a Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution and former United States Circuit Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit.
  • Nina Totenberg, NPR’s award-winning legal affairs correspondent, whose reports air regularly on NPR’s critically acclaimed All Things Considered, Morning Edition and Weekend Edition, focusing primarily on the activities and politics of the Supreme Court of the United States.
