This past Monday evening, the JCC continued its Israel engagement series with an extraordinary conversation moderated by Yisrael Klitsner featuring Nadav Eyal, Tal Shalev, and Dr. Nasreen Haddad Haj-Yahya. Together, they guided our community through a nuanced and thoughtful exploration of Israeli politics, spanning topics from the structure and complexities of Israel’s parliamentary democracy to the realities of Arab society in Israel, and the competing fears and aspirations shaping both the political right and the emerging political left.

What made the evening especially meaningful was not simply the depth of expertise on stage, but the spirit in which knowledge was shared. In a time when public discourse can so easily become polarized or reduced to slogans, this conversation reflected something far more powerful – a commitment to making complex ideas accessible, challenging assumptions, and inviting our community into deeper understanding. In many ways, the evening embodied the idea described by Jeffrey Levine in a 2024 Times of Israel blog reflecting on the Jewish holiday of Shavuot and the teachings of Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks (z”l). Levine wrote, “…what was given at Sinai was not merely a set of laws but a revolutionary shift – the democratization of knowledge.” The conversation at the JCC was an explicit demonstration of that ideal where wisdom and insight were not reserved for a select few, but openly shared with a community eager to learn, question, and grow together.

As we continue this series and usher in Shavuot, we remain grateful to the panelists, our moderator, our planning committee and all those who joined us with curiosity and openness. These conversations do not ask us to agree on every issue. Rather, they challenge us to listen more deeply, engage more thoughtfully, and strengthen our collective capacity to wrestle with the complexities of Israel, Jewish peoplehood, and democracy itself.
Wishing you and your families a Shabbat shalom and Chag sameach,
Jason
