JCC State of Mind – January 26, 2024

It’s nothing new to say that the JCC is all about its middle name -Jewish Community Center. Afterall, community (kehilla) is a core value in Judaism, and it’s a value that applies universally. Creating and supporting community as a vital, life-enriching force – that’s what the JCC of Greater Pittsburgh has been doing for almost 130 years.

This week is Member Appreciation Week, the annual celebration of our community of members. The free classes, demos, treats and raffles are lighthearted and fun, yet this celebration is more than just giveaways. It’s an expression of who we are and what we hold most dear.

Our JCC is not just a physical space. It is a vibrant tapestry woven together by the unique threads of each member. Our members are integral to the vitality of our organization. Our members’ daily presence enriches our shared experiences, creating a supportive environment where individuals can thrive. It’s through our members’ involvement that we build a sense of belonging, fostering connections that extend beyond any one of our four physical locations.

At the JCC, EVERY member matters – of all ages and faiths, interests and abilities. We are relentlessly committed to being open and accessible to everyone, regardless of age, race, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression or special need, and welcoming individuals of all backgrounds, embracing their uniqueness and diversity under our communal tent.

It is the full fabric of what we do – from early childhood to camp to the Virtual Senior Academy to fitness to the Center for Loving Kindness and Civic Engagement, and ALL of those who participate – that make the JCC and our community so special. Our members’ diverse talents, perspectives and contributions make our community happy, healthy and whole.

This week, in acknowledging our members by offering them new JCC experiences, encouraging them to bring their friends to class and to stop by a welcome table for a snack and a chat, we strengthen the bonds that bind us together.

As we express our gratitude during this Member Appreciation Week, let it serve as a reminder of the importance of your role within our community. Together, we create a space that is not only welcoming but also deeply rooted in the values that define us.

Wishing you and your families a Shabbat shalom.

Jason
