When we became a Spartan DEKA affiliate in October 2022, we knew we were adding an innovative fitness program to our South Hills branch. What we didn’t fully anticipate was just how powerfully it would reshape our approach to fitness – and how deeply it would strengthen our sense of community.
DEKA is more than a workout. It’s a form of functional fitness intentionally designed to support participants for the movements of everyday life – lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, kneeling, jumping, climbing and getting down on the ground and standing back up – the activities that keep us strong, capable, and independent. Every movement can be modified meet individuals exactly where they are on their personal fitness journey, making DEKA accessible, empowering, and inclusive.

At the same time, DEKA introduces an energizing element of healthy competition. Participants challenge themselves to improve, racing against the clock to beat their own personal best times, while also competing alongside friends and fellow members. Our quarterly DEKA events have become more than fitness milestones. They are celebrations of progress, perseverance, and community spirit. We have witnessed members encourage one another through tough stations, revel in victories together, and build relationships that extend far beyond the training floor. DEKA has strengthened both bodies and bonds.
Now, we are excited to expand this impact. On February 14, we will bring DEKA Strong to Squirrel Hill, extending this unique and transformative fitness offering to even more members of our Pittsburgh JCC family.
This growth would not be possible without the dedication of our staff. A special thank you to the numerous team members who have stepped forward to support and champion this latest effort. Your leadership, enthusiasm, and commitment to our community continue to elevate everything we do.
We look forward to seeing even more of you step onto the DEKA floor to challenge yourselves, to support one another, and to continue building a stronger, healthier, more connected community together. Click HERE to register for the February 14 event.
AROO!!!!
Wishing you and your families a Shabbat shalom,
