There’s moment in Jewish midrash that I often return to when reflecting on courage and leadership. As our ancestors stood at the edge of the Red Sea, with the Egyptian army closing in behind them, it was not until Nachshon ben Aminadav stepped forward into the water—up to his neck—that the sea began to part. It took one bold act of faith to make way for an entire people’s future.
In many ways, the JCC of Greater Pittsburgh is taking its own Nachshon-like leap next week.
For the first time in the 43-year history of the JCC Maccabi Games®, we are hosting the inaugural JCC Maccabi Campus Games—a completely reimagined version of this beloved event—right here in Pittsburgh, in partnership with the University of Pittsburgh, our presenting sponsor, UPMC and the JCC Association of North America.
Choosing to pilot something untested is never easy. But our decision to say “yes” to this moment reflects the innovative, can-do spirit that defines both our city and our community. Pittsburgh has always been a place where tradition and transformation go hand in hand—from steel to robotics, from local neighborhoods to global impact. And now, from established legacy to bold experimentation in Jewish teen engagement.
This is about more than a sports competition. It’s about investing in the future of Jewish life. About saying we believe in the power of community, in the vitality of our youth, and in the enduring relevance of our mission. Like Nachshon, we are moving forward even when the path isn’t fully clear—because we believe in where it leads.
Let the Games begin!
Wishing you and your families a Shabbat shalom,
Jason
