JCC State of Mind: November 6, 2026 – Building a Healthier Community

This week, two very different experiences across our year-round facilities reminded me of something fundamental about who we are and the role the JCC plays in the broader Pittsburgh community: Building a healthier community takes connection and collaboration to support people at every stage of life.

At our South Hills branch, we were pleased to once again host the Allegheny County Fall Senior Expo, part of Senior Expo USA’s national series of events connecting older adults and caregivers with organizations offering resources to support healthy, active, and independent living. From health insurance and financial planning to home health care, a variety of wellness programs, elder law, and assisted living options, the Expo brought together an impressive range of services and expertise under one roof.

Events like this are important because healthy aging is about so much more than access to medical care. It is about having the information, resources, relationships, and opportunities necessary to maintain independence, remain engaged, and continue living life to its fullest. We were proud to open our doors and provide a space where older adults and their families could make meaningful connections with the people and organizations committed to their well-being.

Meanwhile, at our Squirrel Hill branch, we welcomed a group of first-year students from Chatham University’s College of Health Science and its Foundations of Health and Wellness class. Taught by adjunct faculty member Carolyn Kontos, the course covers the eight dimensions of wellness, and this week the class was focusing on social wellness, specifically the importance of social networks, community, and belonging. Alongside Marsha Mullen, the JCC’s Program Coordinator for Healthy Aging, Carolyn wanted her students to better understand and appreciate that the places that support health and wellness are not limited to hospitals and clinical settings. Rather, they include organizations like the JCC that have the facilities, staff, and programming to create unique opportunities for people to build relationships, remain active, and find purpose throughout their lives.

Our relationship with Chatham extends beyond just this classroom experience, though. Over the past several years, we have also welcomed doctoral students from the university’s Occupational Therapy Department who bring their academic learning into our community through evidence-based capstone projects shaped by their professional interests. These experiences give students the opportunity to apply their knowledge in real-world settings while bringing the JCC new research, fresh perspectives, and innovative approaches to serving our members and the broader community. It is a partnership that demonstrates how much we can accomplish when higher education and community organizations learn from and contribute to one another.

Taken together, these experiences reinforce an important idea: The health of a community is measured not only by the services available to its members, but also by the strength of the relationships that connect them. When educational institutions help prepare the next generation of health professionals, when community organizations share their expertise and resources, and when people of different ages and experiences have opportunities to come together, we extend our reach beyond our respective walls and create something far more powerful than any one program or organization could accomplish on its own. Simply put, everyone benefits.

Wishing you and your families a Shabbat shalom,

Jason
