JCC State of Mind: May 1, 2026 – Celebrating Heroes

This past week, our Pittsburgh Jewish community had the privilege of experiencing something truly meaningful and uplifting through Project HeroesGilad Segev spent time with staff from across our local Jewish communal organizations, sharing the origins and purpose of this initiative, an effort to reframe the narrative of the Jewish people from one rooted in victimhood to one grounded in resilience, strength, and heroism. That message came to life on Wednesday evening at the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh’s Yom Ha’atzmaut celebration, where Gilad and his band delivered a powerful and inspiring performance that left a lasting impression on all who were there.

And speaking of heroes, I had my own inspiring experience earlier in the week during a visit to our South Hills Early Childhood Center. Between being warmly welcomed into classrooms, painting alongside children in our infant and tots rooms, and even being offered hair extensions by a very generous young friend, I saw firsthand what makes this community so special.

In every classroom I visited, I witnessed our child-centric approach in action. Spaces where each child is seen as competent, capable, and full of potential. That doesn’t happen by accident. It is the result of deeply committed educators who bring intention, care, and creativity to their work every single day. Our early childhood educators may not take the stage with guitars and microphones, but they embody the very same heroism Gilad spoke about. Quiet, consistent acts of dedication that shape lives, build confidence, and strengthen our future.

As we reflect on a week that celebrated both Israeli national pride and everyday community impact, I’m reminded that heroism comes in many forms. Sometimes it’s found in music that inspires a people. And sometimes, it’s found in the hands of those guiding our youngest learners with patience, respect, and love.

Wishing you and your families a Shabbat shalom,

Jason
