While many in our community were gathered with loved ones on Christmas Day, a colleague and I had the privilege of delivering lunch to the dedicated staff members who were hard at work keeping our JCC open, welcoming, and vibrant. Taking the time to explicitly say thank you, especially on a holiday when so many of our team members, who are not Jewish, would otherwise be celebrating with family and friends, is one small but meaningful way we show our appreciation for their commitment to our mission.
During our walk through our Squirrel Hill and South Hills buildings, we were reminded yet again why the JCC matters so deeply to so many. One of our AgeWell members – who drives 10 miles to be at the JCC six days a week – stopped us to share that the JCC had “saved her life.” She told us that when she first joined, she relied on a cane; today, thanks to her participation here, she no longer needs it. A bit later, another member expressed that the JCC is the one place where he can be his truest self – words that speak to the heart of who we strive to be and the way we approach our work.
And while our fitness and aquatics centers were full of holiday-day energy, we offered much more than just exercise. Families and individuals took part in community holiday card-making and craft activities, reminding us that the JCC is a place for creativity, connection, and joy no matter the day or time.

Christmas Day was a powerful example of what the Pittsburgh JCC represents: a community hub that is open, welcoming, and ready to meet the diverse needs and interests of our members, every single day of the year. Thank you to our extraordinary staff and to each of you who bring this community to life.
Wishing you and your families a Shabbat shalom,
Jason
