Girls Just Want to…Run!

As I was reviewing the curriculum for our Girls on the Run team, I realized that we are now more than halfway through the program.

We have such an amazing group of third to fifth grade girls from five different schools, and with so many different personalities.  It got me thinking about the vision of the program: “We envision a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams.”

When I started coaching, I thought I knew what that meant.  However, while reflecting on how much our team has accomplished in just a few short weeks, only now can I truly appreciate this program and how much of an impact it has on the local community and on the formation of our future leaders.  I see how much more confident some of the “shy” girls, including my own 3rd grade daughter, have become.

Some of these young ladies came in with the notion that they weren’t “runners” and wouldn’t be able to complete a mile; and now, with the support of their teammates, they walk, run, jump, skip, and giggle lap after lap, all without a doubt in their mind that they could complete a million miles.  In just a few short weeks, they are starting to understand their limitless potential.

You can see what these girls have accomplished as they complete their 5k on Sunday, December 6, and I also invite you to sign up to run among them as well!  It is open to the community, and all ages and running/walking levels are welcome.
