Chanukah, an eight-day holiday, celebrates the re-dedication of the Jerusalem Temple after Judah the Maccabee’s revolt against Syrian King Antiochus, who tried to impose Greek religion on Israel. A small jar of oil, enough for one day, miraculously lasted eight days. To commemorate this, we light a menorah for eight nights and enjoy oil-based foods. Daily candle-lighting and celebrations take place at the JCC.
Chanukah begins at sundown on Sunday, December 14 and lasts until sundown on Monday, December 22. The JCC is open according to the usual schedule.
